Writing Prompts

Nosedive – Write a minimum of 400 words. What is your reaction to the episode? What did you think about the main character, Lacie, and her world? What stood out to you about the episode? Did you find it relatable in any way to society today? How? What did you find disturbing about the episode? Do you see yourself in Lacie in any way?

Create Your Own Rating Scale – Next week, we’ll begin viewing four specific episodes of “Black Mirror.” Before we do, I have an assignment for you. If everyone in the U.S. was rated on a scale of 1 to 5, what do you think those ratings would indicate?

What privileges would those with a 5 rating hypothetically have in society? What limitations would those with a 1 rating have?

If you had to create a rating scale that listed five hypothetical privileges and limitations, what would your scale include? Use your imagination. Be creative. Using the example below, create your own rating scale listing one idea for each rating. Avoid duplicating the example scale.

Ratings:

5 – Those who achieve a 5 rating are among the most wealthy 5 percent of Americans and have access to anything they choose.

4 – Those who have ratings that begin with 4 may live in elite gated communities with two to three story homes.

3 – Those who have ratings that begin with 3 may live in apartment complexes and homes with no more than three bedrooms.

2 – Those who have ratings that being with 2 may purchase used cars of any age. They may not purchase new vehicles.

1 – Those who have ratings that begin with 1 are not allowed to own property. They are homeless. They may purchase cars if they are at least 10 years old and cannot purchase any other vehicles.

What’s Your Rating? – I recently asked you to help me create a rating system like the one you see in “Nosedive.” You did just that, and using our imagination collaboratively, we created a science fiction rating system that I will publish to our Black Mirror Project website. I have one more thing I want you to do before you begin with the next episode of “Black Mirror” that will count as a quiz grade:

  1. Go to https://rateme.social/ and get your rating. Yes. You too must enter the world of “Black Mirror” and have a rating!
  2. Post your rating. You might say: My rating is a 4.5. (The website will even allow you to share your fictional rating on social media if you like. I hope you are at least a 3, but be honest. If you’re not, it proves you really are affected by social media.)

Playtest – Write a minimum of a 400-word review of the episode. What is your reaction to the episode? What did you think about the main character and his world? What stood out to you about the episode? Did you find it relatable in any way to society today? How? What did you find disturbing about the episode? Does this vision of the near future frighten you? Is it becoming more difficult in our world to distinguish between fiction and reality? How?

What did you think about the main character and her world? What stood out to you about the episode? Did you find it relatable in any way to society today? How?
