I can’t stop thinking about the “Black Mirror” episode Nosedive. Living in a world in where our destiny is determined by others rating you is scary. Things like a bad day, being sick, or not being in a good mood could really affect you negatively.
I think about this as I interact with people at work and school. One faux pas, and my life could quickly spiral downward.
My job being in the service industry could be a blessing or a curse. People, on a whim, because they are unhappy with something or they are having a bad day, can rate you really low, and there is really nothing you can do about it. I find myself questioning if my interactions with people would receive a good rating.
Watching Nosedive really made me realize that, in a way, we already live in a similar society. Social media is a great way to connect with people, but it can also garner some bad habits of quickly judging others lives.
A lot of people judge their self-worth on how many followers they have or whether their life is Snapchat ready.
I am guilty of previously wanting to put every little detail of my life on social media, and was impatient with those who chose not to update constantly. My frame of mind is a little different now, but it is still easy to fall into the rating/judging rabbit hole.
Nosedive is a cautionary tale to us all, warning us of how our society will be if we continue on the path that we are on. Currently, we aren’t that far away from that being a reality.
